Unit #1
Students will read the novel "Milkweed" bu Jerry Spinelli and analyze how history can influence a narrative story. Students then use their prior knowledge to break down the narratives into their main components: theme, conflict, plot. Once students have generated an understanding of the elements of a historical fiction, they will create their own historical narrative based on an SBAC prep prompt. Students will conduct research, pull important information, and develop a perspective from which to retell history through a story. |
Unit #2
Students deconstruct examples of informative articles to guide their own writing. Students will create their own informational report in preparation for the District Writing Assessment. This year the DWA will focus on the history of Mars exploration and the possibility of humans living on Mars. Students will write a letter to the astronauts tasked with living on Mars using the information they gathered to best prepare them for life on the new planet. |
Unit #3
Students will learn about Ethos, Pathos, and Logos and how advertisers use these techniques to target specific people. They will then use persuasion to create their own advertisements. Students will research the role video games have on brain development and the controversial diagnosis of "Video Game Addiction" Students will create an article for a medical journal discussing their opinion of Video game addiction. |
